After our recent trip to Bermagui, James and I have decided to spend more time exploring the beautiful South Coast we live on.
I am somewhat obsessed with whales and wasn’t having any luck close to home, so during the holidays we took ourselves off to visit Eden on the far South Coast of NSW to try our luck.
Heading out to Boyd Tower, located south of Twofold Bay in Ben Boyd National Park, we were not disappointed.

The walk from the car park to the tower is generally flat but somewhat eerie; passing under and between the creaking (thanks to the wind) and twisted shapes of mostly bare trees. All we needed was some fog and it would have been the perfect scary movie location.

James had said it was a five story sandstone tower but seeing it wasn’t at all what I expected.
Beautifully built and impressive, Boyd Tower certainly makes it’s presence felt. Along the track to the tower we learnt that it had not been built as a lighthouse as we originally thought but as a way for whaling crews to be notified as soon as whales were spotted entering Twofold Bay so that Ben Boyd could get the upper hand in the whaling business.

Thankfully, the tower is no longer in use and when we’re spotting whales from here they are no longer prey.

And spot we did! Our first whale sighting of the 2014 season. The kids were the first to spot a minute splash and before we knew it we were watching a lovely display.

James took us on a track away from the main viewing area out onto rocks for a better view, taking the children right out while I tried to get some photos. It was difficult to do so as I was too busy worrying that Jasper would jump off the rock and plunge into the depths. Sometimes, I just can’t fight the anxiety.

Down to Red Point
We visited the other fenced off lookout, Red Point, to discover the most amazing rock formation of rich red and brown called folded rocks.

I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Every part of my brain was telling me rocks could not fold and ‘move’ in that manner, that what I was seeing couldn’t not be so. Yet, there it was, all stunning and mysterious.
Finding love in the clouds
It wasn’t quite the perfectly sunny day I had hoped for but the moody clouds set the perfect scene for our exploration.
After some driving through the actual town of Eden we found a spot to explore some more and headed out on the rocks for a glorious finish to the day.

These kinds of adventures are well out of my comfort zone, but so worth pushing through for.
