Until Ellie’s recent 6th Superhero birthday party, we had not thrown a ‘real’, non close family and friends do. After much debate about whether a small party, at home with Ellie’s closest friends would be best or if we should invite all the girls and have it somewhere else would be better, given that they’re only in kindy and still getting to know each other.
Ellie was keen on both ideas, but ultimately, wanted to have all the girls from both kindy classes attend so we bit the bullet and went for it. I ‘designed’ an invite, based around these adorable Justice League figures I found here, and sent them out before we could change our minds.

I had some pretty amazing ideas about the party, the decorations, games, bit and bobs and so on – all spurred on by all the lovely things I found on Pinterest, until reality came crashing down and I realised who I was. And, so, I did what I do best and outsourced. We purchased sandwich platters and the cake from Costco and were gifted some party essentials like plates, balloons, banners and the adorable costumes (which they never take off).
I felt saddened by the prospect of a party which didn’t have all the pretties and didn’t perfectly fit in with our theme. I hated that I can’t bake a decent cake. I was crushed that there would be no photo booth. I so desperately wanted to throw good parties, much like Maxabella does.
I had my little moment and then put on my big girl pants, sucked it up and got on with it.

The day arrived and I could finally answer Kahlei’s question of “Is it Ellie’s party today?” with a hearty yes. Mainly because she’d been asking it constantly for a week. We had decided upon our local Botanical Gardens, which was a great idea until we all realised how far we had to lug everything and my ‘illusion of organised, on top-of-it-all mother’ that I desperately wanted to exude went out the window when the first guests arrived and I was still placing the table cloth.
Still, the sun was out, there were adorably dress children playing and having fun in the playground, children decorating masks to hide their identies and mothers chatting happily (I assume).

The playing, the crafting and the eating all went smoothly, it wasn’t until we were about to play pass-the-parcel and we realised the speaker had been left at home and the phone alone wasn’t loud enough and there might be too many children thanks to extra siblings and an actual legitimate party crasher (which I didn’t know about until afterwards) that things got a little hairy.
In the end, James had to clap for the ‘music’ and, amazingly there was exactly enough layers and prizes to go around (although, in saying that Jasper missed out due to confusion and mixed messages – he took it well and happily went off to play).

James cut the cake surrounded by a gaggle of girls all yelling about which part of the cake they would like. It was hilarious and scary all at once. Next time, plain icing! Lesson learnt.

As things wound up, we gave out balloons with the party bags to our guests, which brought over more random children from the playground wanting one. It was crazy.
It was full on and my introverted self felt somewhat battered in the aftermath. Some days I think I am still recovering, just a little. Every parent I have spoken to since has said it was a good party and that we did well and Ellie had a blast, even if she got a little overwhelmed at stages. In the end, that’s all that matters.
